Master's Thesis project 2023 | A large warehouse built in 1975 in Lindholmen, Gothenburg is currently used as a parking garage. With toxic traits from its industrial glory days as part of the Götaverken shipyard, the building is slowly becoming forgotten. Too young to be seen as industrial heritage, while too old to meet today's indoor climate standard. With a speculative approach, the warehouse has been transitioned to a revitalised state.
Deconstructing parts of the facade such as the sheet metal and rough cast windows, to reconstruct smaller structures inside the warehouse. As the building sector is one of Sweden's most polluting, the role of architects should be to make use of as much of the materials already present on site, avoiding demolition and its negative aspects in terms of sustainability. Avoiding the risk of erasing our heritage and the existing character of a site.
The building's new program was elaborated through a careful analysis of history, usage and time. Photography is a strong design tool in architecture and was utilised for both the inventory and design process.
Adding selected greenery and blue spaces, transitions the warehouse from an industrial, toxic environment to a space of revitalisation. Where new immersive experiences can commence and continue to blossom.
